In order to get your information to display on a search from a search engine that collects web addresses (URLs) from sending a spider (A piece of software that follows links on pages, and lists them in its search engine) across the web, you need to include meta tags in the header of your pages.  The keywords tag is used to improve rankings with search terms that are relevant to your content.  The keywords used place your URL in that search term on the search engine, so if your site is about phones, you would use the keyword:  "mobile phones"

For more advice on how to use META tags and a little about page optimisation, please read below:

Title Tag
(
This is a META title)
This should be less than 50 Chars, but describe your site a little.
Description Tag Write about your page here, between 150 and 250 Characters
Keywords Tag
(separated with
Comma's)
Some Optimisation companies state that between 400 and 600 characters is recommended

To Create your META tags, follow the guidelines that stated above, these guidelines are based upon information that learned from using website optimisation services before.  This information is being offered to you freely, because if all websites are optimised correctly, then search engines will provide better results for search terms used, meaning that people will not get frustrated from searching for topics, and never being able to find what they are looking for due to incorrect results being given more weight, as they are optimised better than more relative sites.

Once you have created your tags, and copied them to clipboard, go to your website editor, and paste the tags between the <head> and </head> tags at the top of your page.  A note on keywords:  Some search engines have a problem recognising that Word is the same as word, however it can recognise word as Word, so it is advised that all keywords are entered in lower case so that your keywords can be recognised by both search terms being entered into the engine.

Keyword spamming (Excessive use of keywords to gain better placement) will lower your search results, but to get the best placement for your content, it is advised that you use the main search terms on your page at least 3 times, but not too frequent as to cause a spamming problem.

It is advised that you don't use a splash screen, as these contain little information about your site, and usually only contain the text click here to enter.  Instead you should make your main menu your start page, as the search engine will be able to see how big your site is, this will improve your rankings because the text contained in the links will usually describe your services in their simplest form, this will match the keywords that will be most relevant to your site.

You should also write at least a paragraph of text describing your site, and what services you offer, this should give your first page a clean viewable page that is also search engine friendly.  Although SEO companies recommend that you create a separate about page no matter what site you use so that even if the majority of your site is a shopping cart there is at least one search engine friendly page.

General Guidance For All Pages

Try to keep all pages viewable without side scrolling, as users do not like to have to scroll sideways.  Try to keep all links easy to spot, and clearly state where they lead with their text.  If you need your site tested, get your granny, who has no computer experience and ask her to visit your site.  If she can figure out how to navigate your site easily, then most people should have no problems in getting around.  The easiest way to do this is setup your design to be relative (IE use 100% as opposed to exact pixels in width) however this could cause problems with some designs, so its always safest to use the lower of the screen resolutions your visitors appear to use.

Search engines cannot view images when they spider your site, to make them visible, use the following tag: <img src="yourpic.jpg" width="*" height="*" alt="What the picture is" title="What the picture is"> This way, not only will your picture be described to search engines, and text based browsers (such as opera), but when a visitor hovers their mouse over the picture, this text will appear, describing the picture.  Most people don't use title as Microsoft IE uses alt for this, but some other browsers (and older versions of Microsoft FrontPage) use the title tag.

Before advertising your site, ensure that all links within your site are working correctly, and that every page allows the visitor to return to the front page of the site, this will allow visitors to easily navigate your site without (hopefully) ever having to use the back button on their browser.

A recognised standard for ease of navigation is the 3 click rule:  From the customer entering your site, they should be able to access any page from within your site with just three clicks.  Some larger sites with lots of content may struggle to achieve this, so for them it is advised to have an internal search feature so that visitors can search the site for the page they are looking for, and be taken directly to the correct part of the site.

If there is a keyword you wish to use but you do not have enough of that keyword be sure to write a little more into your pages so as to include the keyword at least 3 times during the page.

If search engine spiders are having problems finding your site, then be sure to include a sitemap linked from every page of your site you will find that next time the search engine spiders your site that you will have vastly improved listings and all of your pages should be included in search results now.
